Camberwellians And The Business Of Leadership

On 16 January 2019, a variety of people who live, work and network in Camberwell (Camberwellians) gathered together to share their tips on The Business of Leadership with others at  Barolo Trattoria, Level 1, 885 Burke Road, Camberwell.

The discussion began with a presentation from Paul Farina. Here are their tips (paraphrased from notes by Sue Ellson).

After playing, coaching, warching sport, being a trainer and facilitator, sales and marketing, small business, learnt techniques from the sporting field and the change froom on how to improve the capability of teams and for training and education.

How you can leverage capability. It needn’t be a struggle.

  1. Humility – serving others, outward attention, powerful place, not about us, can still be a bad community with just one person
  2. Be present in a crisis – when things hit the fan, don’t leave. Big people strategise and lead from the front. See and hear questions, find out what is not working for customers, have a well set up team that can cope in a crisis
  3. Hard conversations can present the biggest opportunities – the scarier it is, the more likely you need to start. Have lunch together. At Pixar, canteen is in the middle of the hallway so that people can talk and collide. Talk creatively and innovate. Respect and resolution. Consider conflict resolution coaching.
  4. Safety – Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – if you can’t signal safety issues, not safe to do so, can’t plan.  Need to be able to speak up and have autonomy for motivation. Safety based on how you behave.
  5. Self care – sacrifice is not the answer. Do one thing every day that feeds you and gives you energy.
