Camberwellians And The Business Of Leadership

On 20 June 2018, a variety of people who live, work and network in Camberwell (Camberwellians) gathered together to share their tips on The Business of Leadership with others at Barolo Trattoria, Level 1, 885 Burke Road, Camberwell.

The discussion began with a short presentation from Rob Chiarolli. Here are their tips (paraphrased from notes by Sue Ellson).

Rob Chiarolli – Business and Leadership Coach

1. Clear vision for the business and communicate that – managers give people something to work on, leaders work towards

2. Be curious – ask questions everyday to drive continuous improvement

3. Lead by example – turn up on time, do the hard work, team follow you, often quoted, rarely done

4. Be self aware – understand self and the people you are leading

5. Learn how to delegate properly – what can and should do and how to have proper systems for delegation. Learn and rise up.

Andrew McLaren – Retired Pharmacist and Family Engagement Consultant
Vulnerability is important for a leader to accept feedback, both good and bad otherwise can alienate and not work towards and you won’t get any better

Roderick Smith – Public Speaker and Social Researcher
Good leaders have an open-door policy all the time and allow people to come in at any time with questions or queries and listen to feedback

Ernest Gavey – Solar and Renewable Energy Business
Leaders map out a path for people so that everyone is on the same train, all know where going as the leader has the direction in the back of their head

Nicolle Knox – Medi Spa – new age beauty salon
Challenging to lead 24 women, so need to have empathy and care for staff, not just staff as a staff member but as a person with their own life. Beauty is within, not on the outside

Lisa Stafford – Prepare and Present House for Sale
Listen to what people say and focus on what you can control. Not yesterday, need to learn from mistakes

Neil McPherson – Financial Advisor
People choose who they want to follow, need to be a person of integrity, delegation needs a process to support it, not aggregation and dump – need to follow up

Rodrigo Ramirez – Founder and Manager Hawthorn Enterprise Centre
Embody what you do and believe in the idea, provide empowerment opportunities. Hierarchy with engineers, leader captains the boat. Remove the hurdles and engage and see what can happen with different specialities. Keep in touch. Need to connect, report, support.

Eva-Maria Heikenwalder – Marketing for Hawthorn Enterprise Centre
Worked in the farming industry, need to have authenticity – could not tell by myself, needed to lead by example. Need to be a certain way

Luke Wang – Residential Property Manager
Training staff on a regular basis as well as gaining industry knowledge, best practice, structure for employees to grow, industry is changing. Weekly one to one’s. Personal life not work life. Take in feedback, how things can be done better and see challenges arising

Yi Ping Wang – Financial Planner
Very motivated, take action, be organised, everyone can be needed to take action, results driven, work hard

Keith Rhodes – Video Production
Manager is more day to day. When you are behind the camera, you are giving a performance, need strong direction, good body language, explain the bigger picture not just chin up, smile, how look and perform better

Nils Versemann – Business and Trademark Lawyer
Help set the culture of the company, involve staff as the owners are absent and locked away, not necessarily see the staff and any toxic behaviour, keep the team happy so that they want to turn up to work

Louisa Ong – Speech Pathologist
Be humble. Some leaders, employees can be scared to question them – have an open door policy and create time for employees to have a chat. Be humble and acknowledge mistakes.

Diane Beddison – Garden Designer
Plenty of experience in companies, always part of a team. Only ever had two good leaders who spoke, listened, were honest and could manage upwards. When in middle layer, chance to protect people

Melanie Scott – Service Dog Trainer
Served with Victoria Police. Relaxed way about speaking, certain environments need to accept or enforce orders without question. Show compassion towards people, know what skill sets you need and get people who can help you. Might need to create a support team around you.

Sue Ellson – Independent LinkedIn Specialist, Camberwell Network and Newcomers Network Founder, Author of three books
Too many leaders try to lead without developing their own level of digital competency (not just digital literacy). Need to embrace technology and incorporate it in leadership role. Then showcased ‘Find Nearby’ and ‘Scan Code’ options on LinkedIn.
